Emergency Road Repairs Temporarily Close Eastbound I-70 Near Bennett

Motorists traveling between Northwest Kansas and the Denver metro area may have experienced delays after emergency repairs forced the closure of a section of eastbound Interstate 70 near Bennett, Colorado yesterday.

The Colorado State Patrol announced Sunday that eastbound I-70 at milepost 307, just east of Bennett, was closed after the roadway unexpectedly buckled, creating unsafe driving conditions. Traffic was initially diverted at Exit 304 in Bennett, where drivers were directed north to U.S. Highway 36 before continuing east.

Roadway buckling typically occurs during periods of extreme heat when concrete pavement expands. If the expansion has nowhere to go, sections of pavement can suddenly heave upward, creating dangerous conditions for motorists.

The good news for travelers is that the closure did not last long. Colorado Department of Transportation crews completed emergency repairs and reopened eastbound I-70 later the same day.

As of Monday morning, the closure and detour are no longer listed on COtrip.org, indicating traffic has returned to normal through the area. While no additional delays are currently reported, drivers should always check road conditions before heading west toward Denver, especially during periods of extreme summer heat.

The emergency closure serves as a reminder that high temperatures can impact not only vehicles, but also the roads themselves. Transportation officials encourage motorists to remain alert for sudden lane closures and work zones during the summer travel season.
