NWKS RADIO AUGUST 14, 2026---Kansas is looking for plenty of different ways to utilize running back Dylan Edwards this fall. The former Derby standout, who transferred to KU after stops at Colorado and Kansas State, has impressed with his versatility during fall camp. Running backs coach Jonathan Wallace says Edwards has made major strides as a receiver, giving the Jayhawks the ability to line him up in the backfield, split him out wide, or even use him alongside another running back. Edwards says his focus now is mastering the playbook so he can play even faster in Andy Kotelnicki’s offense.
Nebraska and Kansas each landed a linebacker on the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award, presented annually to the nation’s top linebacker. Nebraska junior Owen Chambliss earned a spot after emerging as a key piece of the Husker defense, while Kansas redshirt senior Trey Lathan was also among the 51 players selected nationwide. Both enter 2026 expected to play major roles in the middle of their respective defenses as the Huskers and Jayhawks continue through fall camp.
K-State baseball’s Ty Smolinski is coming home from the Cape with some major hardware. The Wildcat junior was named MVP of the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League after hitting .313 with six home runs, nine doubles and 10 stolen bases for the Harwich Mariners. Smolinski also helped lead Harwich to the league championship. He becomes the first K-State player ever to win a Cape Cod postseason award and the first Big 12 player to claim the league’s MVP honor.
Both the Royals and Rockies hit the road for a three-game weekend series. Kansas City heads to Anaheim looking to bounce back after being swept by the Dodgers and losing 10 of its last 13. The Royals open against the Angels tonight with Seth Lugo on the mound, followed by Randy Dobnak Saturday and Noah Cameron Sunday. Colorado heads to San Francisco with some momentum after taking two of three from Arizona for just its second road series win of the season. Kyle Freeland gets the ball tonight against the Giants, followed by Michael Lorenzen Saturday and Gabriel Hughes Sunday.
