BURLINGTON, Colo. — April 15, 2025
The Burlington School District RE-6J Board of Education met for a special meeting on Monday, April 15, to address key budgetary items ahead of the 2025–2026 academic year, including salary adjustments for staff and extracurricular positions.
Board President Darren Bennett called the meeting to order at 12:08 p.m. in the District Board Room. Roll call showed five members present—Bennett, Justin Carter, George Homm, Casey McDaniel, and Stacie Perez—while Directors Denise Cure and Grant James were absent.
Modest Salary Increase Approved for 2025–26
One of the main agenda items was the review and approval of updated salary schedules for the upcoming school year. Business Manager Rina Barkhuizen presented the revised figures, which included a 1% increase to the base salary schedule. While Superintendent Tom Walkinshaw expressed interest in offering a larger raise, district funding constraints for next year made a more substantial increase unfeasible.
The board approved the salary schedule in a 4-0 vote, with President Bennett abstaining.
Updates to Extra Duty Salary Schedule
The board also reviewed and unanimously approved the 2025–26 extra duty salary schedule, which outlines compensation for staff taking on additional roles such as coaching and club sponsorships. Barkhuizen provided a detailed overview of the proposed changes during the discussion portion of the meeting.
Consent Agenda and Meeting Wrap-Up
All items on the consent agenda were approved unanimously, including the routine administrative matters.
With no additional business to address, the board adjourned the meeting at 12:36 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Burlington Board of Education is scheduled for April 28, 2025, at 7:00 p.m.
The decisions made during this special meeting reflect the district’s continued efforts to balance fiscal responsibility with the support of its educators and staff.
