This week, May 10th - May 16th, is National Police Week, as well as Peace Officer Memorial Day on May 15th. Make sure to celebrate the officers who keep us safe each and every day, but also make sure to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Below is an excerpt from the Goodland Police Department's Facebook page talking about the importance of this week:

"National Police Week is May 10th through May 16th, 2026, with Peace Officer Memorial Day being May 15th. I want to take time to recognize and honor the incredible men and women of law enforcement who put on the badge every day and answer a calling that most could never fully understand. Behind every uniform is a human being, someone’s husband or wife, mother or father, son or daughter, friend, neighbor, and of course, their superhero.

It makes no difference for the law enforcement officers who overcome the risks, the long hours, the sacrifices, and the weight they carry; they continue to show up every single day to protect and serve the City of Goodland, Sherman County, and communities everywhere.

Law enforcement officers often see people on the worst days of their lives. They run toward danger while others run away. They miss holidays, birthdays, family dinners, and family moments with loved ones because duty calls. They carry burdens that many never see, and still they stand strong for the safety of others, with zero hesitation. That kind of courage, selflessness, and dedication deserves more gratitude and respect than words can truly express.

This week is not only about appreciation, but also about remembrance.

On May 15th, National Peace Officers Memorial Day, we pause with heavy hearts to honor the brave officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. These heroes gave their lives protecting complete strangers, serving something greater than themselves. Their names, their courage, and their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

We also hold close the families left behind, the spouses, children, parents, friends, and fellow officers who continue living with the pain of that loss every day. Your sacrifice matters. Your loved ones mattered. This community and every community will always owe a debt of gratitude that can never truly be repaid.

To every officer currently serving, to every retired officer, and to every fallen hero, thank you. Thank you for your courage in uncertain situations. Thank you for your sacrifice when nobody is watching. Thank you for the lives you save, the communities you protect, and the strength you show even on the hardest days.

May we never take your service for granted."
