On Tuesday, April 14, the Kansas Court of Appeals made the trip to the Frahm Theatre at Colby Community College to hear two different cases and provide an educational experience for students.
The cases were very real, and so was the educational experience. Students from local high schools as well as Colby Community College students were in attendance, learning how a Court of Appeals proceeds.
Judge Angela Coble served as presiding judge, with Judge Jacy Hurst joining her, and Chief Judge Paula Hofaker of the 17th Judicial District sitting by special order. They heard two hearings for two different cases. Each side of the argument had an attorney who was given 15 minutes to present their cases and answer questions from the panel of Judges. No decision was made public on Tuesday, but they will provide their opinions at a later date.
Kansas Court of Appeals Chief Judge Sarah Warner gave a statement in a press release by Colby Community College on why these traveling hearings are important:
"Taking the docket beyond our usual courtrooms allows students and the public to observe the appellate process firsthand," she said. "It also provides an opportunity for collaboration between appellate and district court judges."
