Community Rallies During Hoxie House Fire; One Injured Firefighter, One Life Saved

A structure fire on the evening of May 14 brought urgency, bravery, and community spirit to the forefront in Hoxie, Kansas. At approximately 7:09 p.m., Sheridan County Communications received multiple reports of smoke and flames erupting from the roof of a home located at 941 15th Street.

Emergency units from the Sheridan County Fire Department—including teams from Hoxie, Menlo, Selden, and Rexford—rushed to the scene, joined by law enforcement and EMS personnel. Upon arrival, responders confirmed the fire and learned that an elderly male occupant had been inside the residence just moments before.

Thanks to the quick and selfless actions of nearby Good Samaritans, the man was safely brought outside before emergency crews arrived. Their heroism likely saved a life, as flames rapidly intensified.

While several firefighters were evaluated on scene as a precaution, one firefighter sustained a foot injury while battling the blaze. They were treated at Ambermed and later released from the hospital.

The fire’s cause is currently under investigation by the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Sheridan County Fire Department, and the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office. Preliminary reports suggest that the blaze may have been electrical in origin, though no official determination has been made.

Sheriff Brandon Carver issued a statement praising the efforts of all who responded: “We extend our sincere gratitude to the courageous individuals who assisted in getting the gentleman to safety, as well as to our local emergency personnel—firefighters, EMS, law enforcement officers, and dispatchers. Many observers commented on the professionalism and coordination on display throughout the response.”

Wind gusts up to 70 mph swept through the area shortly after the fire was extinguished, heightening concern about potential flare-ups. Fire crews remained vigilant, ensuring no re-ignition occurred.

The affected family faces a challenging road ahead. The Sheriff’s Office and other local officials ask the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers as they recover from the loss.

This incident served as a reminder of the strength, compassion, and cooperation that define rural Kansas communities. From first responders to neighbors willing to act in a crisis, Hoxie came together when it mattered most.
