Cowboy Football falls on Senior Night

GOODLAND, KS -- The Goodland Cowboy football team got off to a fast start but could not hold on as they lost 45-16 to the Eagles from Hugoton on senior night at Cowboy Stadium.

The Cowboys got off to a fantastic start scoring on their first offensive possession and then, after getting a stop on defense, got a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown from junior Manny Gonzalez to go up 16-0.

But on the very next possession, the game took a turn as Goodland roughed the punter giving the Eagles new life and from that moment forward Hugton would outscore GHS 45 to nothing on their way to victory.

Hugoton had three different players rush for over 100 yards on the night and totaled 392 as a team on the ground. Fullback Adam Mendoza had a game-high four rushing scores on the night.

Goodland was led by senior tailback Mason Hernandez who totaled 190 yards of GHS' 275 on the night. Senior tight end Maverick Spresser also had a solid game catching a season-high three passes for 60 yards.

Despite the loss Goodland (2-6, 1-3) qualifies for the postseason for the first time since 2013. But the Cowboys will have to face 3A power and three-time defending state champ Andale in the first round who have won 46 straight football games.

The win improved Hugoton 6-2 overall & 2-2 in district play earning them the three seed in the district standings. The Eagles will play at Cheney in the first round of the KSHSAA 3A State Playoffs.
