On the Good Neighbor Hour, host Lucas Kenney brought on the Athletic Director for Goodland USD 352 Marty Lehman to review the 2025-26 athletics season with it ending this past weekend with the State track meet.
The first thing Lehman was excited to talk about was actually next season. Lots of new coaches are coming in, including football and girls basketball, so bright things are ahead for the many programs in the district.
Even more exciting is the great start that they've had for the summer programs, like weightlifting. Lehman said, "We had about 70 high school students in the weight room yesterday, and someone told me this morning that attendance was even higher today. Hopefully we can keep those numbers up throughout the summer and continue preparing for next year."
Lehman had a large emphasis on the importance of summer weights and what it does for the teams during the school year.
"That's really where teams are built for the following season. There's a lot of bonding that happens during summer activities...A lot of team chemistry is developed during those experiences."
Another interesting point that Lehman made was the increase in Rule 10 coaches. For those who may not know, Rule 10 coaches are coaches who don't work in the school system otherwise, like a teacher or administrator.
From the sounds of it, Goodland has some very impactful Rule 10 coaches who stay involved regardless of that label.
"Our entire high school football staff this year will have just one certified teacher, while the other four coaches are Rule 10 coaches. They're people who simply care about kids and want to help them improve. All four of those coaches were there this morning at 6 a.m. It's really cool to see."
Lehman and Kenney then went on to highlight the springs sports a little bit, including the GWAC league champion golf team and the many track athletes who qualified for the state meet. Another note he made included the number of underclassmen who got playing time in all sports and are returning next year.
The last thing AD Lehman wanted to add regarded the overall GWAC school standings for all sports. Lehman highlighted, "Schools earn points throughout the year based on where they finish in each sport. It's scored similarly to a track meet—10 points for first place, eight for second, and so on.
This year, Goodland finished third overall in the league, which is a solid accomplishment."
