Goodland Clay Target Team Finishes 5th in the Nation at High School Championships

MASON, MI — Five sharp-shooting athletes from Goodland High School made their mark at the High School Clay Target League National Championships, held July 11–13 in Mason, Michigan. The team not only competed against some of the best shooters in the country but also brought home a historic 5th place national finish — the best ever for the program.


Representing Goodland were Josh McKenzie, Jackson Yost, Carter Yost, Barrett Schlosser, and Brody Schlosser.


The competition kicked off Friday with the team qualifier round, featuring 264 teams from across the United States. Only the top 80 teams would advance to the finals. Goodland tied for 25th with an impressive team score of 477 out of 500, but after a reverse run tiebreaker, they officially landed in 30th place — good enough to move on to Sunday’s championship round.


Individual scores in the qualifier:

  • Josh McKenzie – 97/100

  • Jackson Yost – 97/100

  • Barrett Schlosser – 96/100

  • Carter Yost – 95/100

  • Brody Schlosser – 92/100


Saturday featured the individual qualifier, with 1,770 competitors vying for a spot in the top 400. Three GHS athletes made the cut.


Standout performances:

  • Jackson Yost shot a perfect 100/100, tying for 1st place and recording his first perfect round.

  • Carter Yost scored a 98/100, placing him in 130th.

  • Barrett Schlosser shot 96/100, landing in 393rd.

  • Josh McKenzie narrowly missed the cut with a 95/100 (524th place).


Sunday began with the team championship round, and the GHS squad came out firing. The boys combined for an incredible 492/500, dropping just eight clays total. That effort placed them in a three-way tie for 3rd, and after official scoring and reverse runs, they proudly claimed 5th place in the nation.


Highlights included:

  • Barrett Schlosser’s first perfect 100/100

  • Four shooters — Jackson, Carter, Josh, and Brody — each posting 98/100


Sunday afternoon wrapped up with the individual finals. Despite tougher weather conditions with heat, humidity, and wind, the Goodland shooters held their own:

  • Barrett Schlosser – 96/100 (179th place)

  • Jackson Yost – 95/100 (254th place)

  • Carter Yost – 94/100 (305th place)



The performance by these five young men is a milestone for the GHS program. From multiple personal bests to the first-ever 5th place national trophy, It was a weekend full of pride, progress, and unforgettable moments. Barrett and Jackson each notched their first-ever perfect 100s, Josh achieved a new personal best with a 98, and the team brought home hardware that sets a new bar for future competitors.
