News director and new host of the Good Neighbor Hour on Rockit 102.5 KLOE, Lucas Kenney, invited Goodland City Manager Kent Brown onto the show to discuss the latest City Commission meeting, which was held on June 1st.
The first topic included a public comment to the commission. Brown said, "Alex West came on behalf of Goodland Raceway. He was asking for assistance with resources for the races this summer, specifically catch fencing and wire that need to be installed at the raceway." The first races at the Goodland Raceway is June 27th and 28th.
Next, the commission moved on to regular business. A piece of Kansas Legislature had been passed this spring to allow for liquor stores to extend hours for the FIFA World Cup, starting June 11th to July 19th. Brown noted the commissions action regarding this topic.
"The commission had previously directed staff to prepare an ordinance, and last night they passed Ordinance 1821, which allows those extended hours. Participation is up to each individual business owner."
The Chip Rock Bid was then presented to Frontier Ag. This is a bid to seal streets around the city, which should start shortly.
The Commission also heard from Sherman County Community Development Board President Matt McKenzie and Bert Mosier about the community wayfinding sign project. They have previously come to the commission with this project. Brown noted, "After considerable discussion, the city commission directed staff to fulfill the request. It was a limited request, but it was approved."
Moving on, the next topic revolved around water usage and conservation. City Manager Brown mentioned that recent rains have helped with conservation, but the city is still using around 1 million gallons of water a day.
"Before the recent rains, usage had climbed as high as 1.7 to 1.9 million gallons per day. Now we're down to about 1.1 to 1.2 million gallons, but there is still room for conservation. We review those numbers regularly and continue encouraging residents to conserve water when possible."
The last main topic the commission discussed was budget proposals. The 2027 budget will continue to be a large topic at the next couple meetings to gain direction from the city commission.
After that were some reminders, which included a joint meeting reminder on June 8th which will feature a presentation on a large housing project.
The next regular meeting for the Goodland City Commission will be on Monday, June 15th.
