In his latest edition of Kansas Common Sense, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran provided an in-depth look at his recent efforts to honor our nation’s heroes, protect Kansas families and farmers, and advance opportunities for future generations. Here are the highlights from his May 5, 2025 update:
Celebrating the Legacy of the Six Triple Eight
One of the most poignant moments of the week was the Congressional Gold Medal ceremony honoring the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the only all-Black, all-female unit to serve overseas during WWII. Senator Moran, who introduced the legislation that led to the award, reflected on the battalion’s pivotal role in clearing a massive backlog of wartime mail and boosting soldier morale. “Their legacy is one of dedication, perseverance, and patriotism,” Moran said.
Fighting for Safer Skies Over D.C.
Following two near-misses involving a military helicopter and commercial aircraft near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Senator Moran urged a reevaluation of military flight operations in that airspace. “Public safety must come first,” he insisted, calling on the Army and FAA to act swiftly to prevent a repeat of past mistakes.
Holding Nominees Accountable
Senator Moran questioned Deputy Secretary of Commerce nominee Paul Dabbar on support for tourism, NOAA’s role in agriculture forecasting, and trade agreements vital to Kansas’ economy. He also supported the advancement of NASA Administrator nominee Jared Isaacman, pressing for continued support of space exploration programs tied to Kansas aerospace manufacturers.
Veteran Suicide Prevention at the Forefront
As Chair of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Moran led a hearing focused on improving suicide prevention services for veterans. He highlighted his HOPE for Heroes Act of 2025, aimed at expanding partnerships between the VA and local mental health providers. “Veterans need access to care wherever they are,” he emphasized.
Boosting Biomedical Research and Renewable Fuels
Moran praised the NIH for generating nearly $400 million in economic impact in Kansas and pledged continued support for federal biomedical research funding. He also celebrated the permanent year-round sale of E15 gasoline—a win for Kansas corn growers—and joined a resolution marking May as Renewable Fuels Month.
Defending Local Industry and National Security
On a visit to Sikorsky’s manufacturing facility, Moran underscored Kansas’ vital role in defense manufacturing through companies like Spirit AeroSystems. He pledged continued investment in defense infrastructure through his work on the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee.
Meeting with Kansans
From broadband providers and community pharmacists to university leaders and high school students, Senator Moran maintained a busy schedule engaging with Kansans. He emphasized the need for PBM reform, rural broadband investment, and affordable higher education. In Council Grove, Moran addressed a staffing issue threatening lake access and pledged to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to keep the area open to visitors and beneficial to local businesses.
Spotlighting Kansas Pride
Congrats to Jared Casey of Plainville for earning a rookie minicamp invite with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Military Appreciation Month was recognized with gratitude for all those in uniform.
Service Academy Applications are now open for Kansas students seeking to serve their country.
Senator Moran closed his newsletter by thanking constituents for their continued engagement and reiterated his commitment to serving the people of Kansas.
