With the amount of severe weather that's been received in the local area these last few days, drain stoppages are bound to happen, leaving some roadways flooded. Especially in Thomas County, roads, ditches, and lots of other areas have standing water.
When navigating around these storms, the Kansas Division of Emergency Management wants to remind everyone to NEVER drive into floodwaters.
Statistics show that over 50% of flood fatalities are vehicle related. If the area is blocked off, don't drive around the barricades into a flooded roadway. Just 12 inches of moving water can sweep a small vehicle off the roadway, 18 inches for a larger vehicle.
Be weather aware and stay safe during severe situations!
