The Colby Lady Eagles made a bold statement on Tuesday, April 15, as they hosted the Scott City Beavers for a doubleheader and walked away with two hard-earned wins. Behind dominant pitching and timely offense, the Lady Eagles secured 9-4 and 6-5 victories, gaining valuable momentum in conference play.
In Game 1, Colby’s ace Ryler Carter was nearly untouchable in the circle. The sophomore struck out 13 batters and allowed only three hits and four runs (just three earned) over seven innings, leading the Eagles to a 9-4 win.
After a slow start through two scoreless innings, Colby’s offense erupted in the third with a five-run rally. Sadie Cheney opened the scoring with an RBI single, followed by bases-loaded walks drawn by Briley Kleinsorge and Karli Hills. Myka Nolan capped the inning with a two-RBI single, giving Colby a commanding lead.
Patient at the plate, the Lady Eagles drew seven walks and made the most of their opportunities. Kleinsorge led the team with three RBIs despite having just one hit, and Jalyssa Sabatka chipped in by going 2-for-3 to lead the team in hits.
Scott City’s Wolk pitched six innings, giving up nine runs — only four earned — and took the loss. Offensively, Wolk and Edwards were bright spots for the Beavers, combining for three hits and two RBIs.
Game 2 proved to be a tighter contest, but Colby once again rose to the occasion with a 6-5 win. Carter returned to the circle and matched her Game 1 performance, striking out 13 more while giving up six hits and three earned runs in another complete game.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first, highlighted by Carter’s solo home run and an RBI single from Kleinsorge. Sadie Cheney continued her stellar night, doubling in the third and again in the fifth to drive in crucial runs as Colby regained the lead after Scott City tied the game.
Cheney finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBIs and was the offensive star of the nightcap. Carter also contributed at the plate, tallying two hits.
Scott City kept things close thanks to timely hits from Irvin, Fox, and Felker. Gentry added speed on the basepaths with two stolen bases, and the Beavers held firm defensively with no errors.
With the sweep, the Lady Eagles continue to build confidence as they prepare to host Hugoton on Tuesday. Led by Carter’s dominance in the circle and strong offensive performances from Cheney, Kleinsorge, and Sabatka, Colby is shaping up to be a formidable contender as the season heats up.
