A series of passing systems brought much-needed rainfall across northwest Kansas between May 25 and May 28, delivering measurable precipitation to nearly every corner of the region. While totals varied widely, many communities picked up between half an inch and nearly two inches of rain—an encouraging boost for farmers and ranchers as growing season continues.
In Logan County, some of the highest amounts were recorded, with 1.8 inches falling northwest of Russell Springs and 1.79 inches in Winona. Oakley also picked up a substantial 1.17 inches. Gove County saw similar activity, highlighted by 1.33 inches in Park and 1.14 inches in Quinter.
Graham County also saw generous totals, with Saint Peter reporting 1.18 inches and Morland close behind with .84 inches. Nearby in Norton County, the city of Norton recorded .72 inches, while Rawlings County communities Atwood and McDonald received .84 and .69 inches, respectively.
Sherman County’s Goodland registered .92 inches, and Thomas County’s Colby wasn’t far behind with .78 inches. Rainfall in Decatur County was more scattered, ranging from .24 inches in Dresden to .66 inches just outside of Oberlin.
Scott City in Scott County reported .76 inches, while Hoxie in Sheridan County recorded a more modest .3 inches. Cheyenne County was split, with Bird City receiving .77 inches but Saint Francis seeing only .09 inches.
Overall, the recent moisture is a welcome sight for many agricultural producers across northwest Kansas, helping replenish soil moisture and support early summer crops. More rain in the coming weeks would continue to alleviate dry conditions that have lingered through parts of the spring.
