Norton School Committee Recap – April 16, 2025: School Choice, Celebrations, and Community Impact

by Derek White

The Norton School Committee convened on April 16, 2025, at Town Hall for a robust meeting that touched on enrollment decisions, student accomplishments, administrative milestones, and heartfelt farewells.

Student Spotlight: Cubing Creativity on Display

The evening began with a presentation from the Norton High School Cubing Club, led by advisors Jennifer Young and Michelle King. Students showcased their skills in designing intricate mosaics using Rubik’s Cubes—demonstrating both teamwork and artistry. The club, which began in 2017 thanks to a NEED grant, meets twice a month and is open for mosaic requests.

School Choice Debate: Data-Driven and Community-Engaged

A public hearing was held to determine School Choice participation for the 2025–2026 academic year. Superintendent Dr. Jennifer O’Neill delivered a comprehensive analysis, including detailed financial data on special education (SPED) services. Norton received over $353,000 in SPED reimbursements, more than offsetting costs.

Two plans were discussed: Dr. O’Neill’s original proposal to add 7 students, and an alternative that reallocated openings across grades. After public comments from teachers and residents supporting the program, the committee approved a revised plan to open:

  • 2 slots in 1st grade

  • 2 slots in 8th grade

  • 5 combined slots for 9th and 10th grade

This 7-slot plan passed 3–2, ensuring new School Choice students will continue to enhance the district's diversity and funding.

Student Updates: Academics and Activities in Full Swing

From designing prosthetics at JCS to “March Mathness” tournaments at HAYS, students across the district are fully engaged in academics and extracurriculars. Norton Middle School clubs are thriving, and NHS students are gearing up for a spirit-filled “Battle of the Grades” and the upcoming Opportunity Fair, which will host over 35 colleges and organizations.

Superintendent Evaluation and Contract Renewal

Chairperson Nick Schleicher presented a strong performance review for Superintendent Dr. O’Neill, praising her leadership and transparency. The Committee unanimously voted to extend her contract through June 2029, with Dr. O’Neill expressing gratitude for the continued trust and support.

Farewell to Sheri Cohen

In an emotional moment, the meeting recognized Sheri Cohen’s nine years of service to the School Committee. Colleagues, community leaders, and audience members expressed heartfelt thanks for her dedication to students and public service. She was honored with flowers, signs, and a plaque from Dr. O’Neill.

Cohen, visibly moved, said, “I truly care about people and appreciate everyone. This has been a good nine years.”

AED Donation Enhances School Safety

A powerful moment came with the acceptance of nine donated AEDs from the Sisters@Heart organization and the American Heart Association. These will be installed in weatherproof containers across school grounds, improving emergency preparedness.

Upcoming Town Election Reminder

The community is reminded that the Norton Town Election will take place on Saturday, April 26 at Town Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The meeting adjourned at 7:54 p.m. The next School Committee meeting is scheduled for April 30, 2025.

Stay tuned for continued updates on how Norton Public Schools are empowering students and growing with the community.
