Jessica McCoy with the Brewster Public School system joined the Good Neighbor Hour to discuss things going on within the school district. The most important item she mentioned included Brewster separating themselves from the Winona-Tri Plains cooperative, as well as some upcoming programs they're adding for the next school year and other important items.

First up was a discussion about moving away from the cooperative with Winona-Tri Plains. McCoy noted that they had been in the cooperative for about 20 years, including using the mascot "Titans". However, they're moving away from that cooperative and going back to the Brewster Bulldogs.

"So, we are going back to our tradition of the Brewster Bulldogs and bringing that back home to start up that school and community pride again, as well as represent what being a Brewster Bulldog is all about."

This change is huge for the school, especially for athletic teams. They will now compete as the Bulldogs again after nearly two decades as the Titans with Winona-Tri Plains.

The sports that are offered will remain the same, with football, volleyball, boys' and girls' basketball, and track. However, they have taken into consideration some other interests from the students regarding adding sports.

"When our numbers increase, we'd love to offer more. We've looked into wrestling, some kids have shown interest in golf, so we're taking those considerations and just exploring what options we have."

Another item to highlight includes a program that has been going on recently in the school. In their school building, they have K-12 students, so to try and break the grade barrier, they introduced the "Bulldog Buddies" program.

The Bulldog Buddies program pairs an older kid with a younger kid throughout the year. They meet once a quarter to interact, talk with each other, and do activities. McCoy is very proud of this program and what it can do for the kids.

"We're very proud that we're doing these things and allowing the younger kids to learn responsibilities as they get older, from the older kids, as well as being able to have those role-models."

At Brewster, they also pride themselves on knowing their kids very well, so they pair up those kids up based on their interests. For example, if a younger kid really likes basketball, they will pair them up with an older kid on the basketball team.

Jessica McCoy and the Brewster Public School is making great strides to improve school pride and creating a safe space for all in the building.
