School Spotlight: Brewster USD 314

Our next school spotlight brings us to USD 314 in Brewster! Jessica McCoy, Superintendent and Principal at the K-12 school joined Lucas Kenney to visit about how the school year has gone, fall sports, and a program implemented in their school called "Bulldog Buddies".
First off, McCoy talked about how the school year has gone so far, and for the first quarter, it has been busy yet very successful so far.
Kenney and McCoy also discussed the new personal electronic device ban that went into effect for all schools in Kansas. When asked how the process has been implementing this new law, she said it's been smooth because they already had a policy in place before the legislation.
Students weren't thrown off by the policy because at Brewster, they had been using phone pouches for a few years. The only thing was making sure the legislation gets enforced a little harder and making the restrictions more permanent.
Next, they talked about how the fall sports season has gone. For those who don't know, the Brewster Bulldogs have broken away from their coalition with Winona-Triplains for sports. While they may not be winning a ton of games, the community pride and support for having the Bulldogs back has been tremendous. They're looking forward to many more years of Bulldog sports back in Brewster.
The last topic of conversation between Kenney and McCoy was about their "Bulldog Buddies" program. This program pairs an older kid with a younger kid in the K-12 building to interact, doing activities together, and provide an older role model for the younger generation of Bulldogs.
McCoy said the pairings have worked out great, and some of their first activities together are coming up soon with Homecoming week approaching. The buddies meet once every quarter for a total of at least four times a school year.
