Senator Jerry Moran Highlights Safety, Service, and Kansas Values in May 19 Newsletter

by Derek White

In the latest edition of his Kansas Common Sense newsletter, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran shared a wide-ranging update on key legislative efforts, community outreach, and support for Kansans impacted by recent severe weather.

At the forefront, Moran introduced new legislation aimed at improving aviation safety by requiring all aircraft operating in Class B airspace to use Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) devices. Prompted by a fatal helicopter crash and several near misses at Washington’s DCA airport, Moran emphasized that the legislation is essential to preventing future tragedies in crowded airspace.

In response to the devastating tornadoes that struck Plevna and Grinnell, Moran expressed his commitment to supporting affected communities. He praised local efforts and pledged to help ensure the necessary resources are available as recovery continues.

The newsletter also highlighted Moran’s involvement in recent Senate hearings on aviation safety and military preparedness. He voiced concerns over the Army’s Pacific-focused restructuring, warning that units like the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley should not be overlooked in broader national defense strategies.

In addition, Moran advocated for confirmation of key Department of Veterans Affairs nominees, visited with Kansas business and law enforcement leaders in Washington and back home, and celebrated National Space Day, Police Week, and National Beef Month—all while reaffirming his focus on Kansas values, agricultural excellence, and national leadership.

Students interested in attending a U.S. Service Academy were also reminded that Moran’s office is now accepting applications for the Class of 2030, with materials due by October 4, 2025.

From safeguarding our skies to honoring our veterans, Moran’s weekly update reaffirmed his priorities: safety, service, and support for Kansans at home and beyond.
