by Derek White

An 18-year-old man from Sterling was killed Thursday evening in a two-vehicle crash on K-156, approximately 3.4 miles northeast of Ellsworth.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 7:00 p.m. on May 15, when a 2011 Chrysler 200 driven by Nathaniel B. Dold was traveling eastbound on K-156 near milepost 169. For unknown reasons, Dold’s vehicle crossed the center line and struck a westbound 2021 Peterbilt semi-truck.

Dold was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries in the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to Parsons Funeral Home. The KHP confirmed that next of kin were notified later that evening.

The driver of the semi, 58-year-old Noel J. Schilling of Morrill, Kansas, was wearing a seatbelt and sustained suspected minor injuries. He was transported to Ellsworth County Hospital for treatment.

Both vehicles were removed from the scene by the Ellsworth Service Center. The Peterbilt was hauling a 2024 Wilson cattle trailer at the time of the collision.

No charges have been filed, and the incident remains under investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
