Tragedy Strikes Rural Cheyenne County in Fatal Sunday Night Crash

Updated: May 13

by Derek White

In a heartbreaking accident that shook the close-knit communities of Bird City and St. Francis, one man lost his life and three others sustained injuries in a single-vehicle crash on the night of Sunday, May 11.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of County Road E and County Road 10, roughly nine miles west of K-27. A 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, traveling northbound on County Road 10, failed to navigate the turn at County Road E. Authorities said the vehicle was moving too fast to make the curve and left the roadway, rolling side-over-side twice before coming to rest upright, facing southeast.

Juan E. Yanez-Derma, 40, of Bird City, was the driver of the vehicle. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at Cheyenne County Hospital. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Yanez-Derma was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. His family was notified later that night by a Cheyenne County deputy.

The three passengers, all from St. Francis, were also taken to area hospitals. Bryan G. Alaracon-Martinez, 19, and Francisco J. De La Mora-Palomo, 33, were both transported with suspected serious injuries, while Cesar V. Chavez-Alaron, 36, was treated for minor injuries. None of the occupants were reported to have been wearing seatbelts.

This devastating incident has left two communities mourning and many families grappling with grief and uncertainty. In small towns like Bird City and St. Francis, where neighbors are often more like family, a tragedy such as this sends shockwaves far and wide. The names involved are familiar, the faces dear, and the sorrow shared by many.

The Silverado was removed from the scene by Alex’s Radiator and towed to a local lot. The investigation continues, but early indications point to speed and lack of restraint use as contributing factors.

As these families begin to process unimaginable loss and recovery, we pause to remember Juan Yanez-Derma, a member of the Bird City community whose life was tragically cut short. We also extend heartfelt prayers and well-wishes for healing to BryanCesar, and Francisco, and hope for strength and support for all impacted by this accident.

In times like these, may the region find solace in its unity, and may those affected feel the full embrace of their communities.
