More than 100 kids with their families gathered at Villa High Park in Colby on Saturday morning, May 9th, for the Annual Free Kid’s Fishing Derby, enjoying a morning filled with fishing, food, fun, and community spirit.
The event ran from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and welcomed kids from Kindergarten through 6th grade to cast a line and enjoy the outdoors at no cost. Families lined the pond early as young anglers hoped to hook the “big one” while enjoying beautiful spring weather and plenty of excitement around Villa High.
The event was made possible through a partnership between the City of Colby, the Thomas County Community Foundation, Colby Community College, Kiwanis of Colby, and the Western Kansas Outdoor Association.
The Western Kansas Outdoor Association provided a free lunch, grilling approximately 90 hot dogs and 80 hamburgers for participants and families to enjoy. Lunch also included chips, drinks, and cookies. Food for the event was generously provided by Walmart, Dillons, Foote, and Outdoor Bank.
The Kiwanis Club of Colby also used the event to celebrate its 60th anniversary. Families enjoyed a special appearance from a balloon artist who entertained kids by creating colorful balloon figures throughout the morning.
NWKS Radio provided music during the derby, helping create a fun and upbeat atmosphere around the pond from their Rolling Radio while staff from Colby Community College, Colby Rec, and Western Kansas Outdoor Association were also on hand assisting with activities and helping the event run smoothly.
Organizers say the fishing derby continues to be a favorite spring tradition in Colby, bringing together local organizations, volunteers, and families for a free morning of outdoor fun and community connection.
