The 2025 Kansas State Track & Field Championship held at Wichita State's Cessna Stadium brought excitement, fierce competition, and outstanding performances from athletes across the state. Athletes from the NWKS Radio listening area represented their schools proudly, making their mark in a weekend that featured unforgettable finishes, personal bests, and emotional celebrations.
Boys' Sprints: A Dominant Showing by Karsyn Wright
The boys' sprints were highlighted by Karsyn Wright of Weskan High School, who captured the attention of the crowd with his blistering speed. Wright claimed first in the 1A Boys 100 Meter Dash with a personal-best time of 10.95 seconds, nearly a tenth of a second faster than second place. He followed that up with another win in the 1A Boys 200 Meter Dash, finishing in a lightning-fast 22.67 seconds.
Wright’s dominance didn’t stop there. He earned another top-six finish in the 1A Boys 400 Meter Dash, placing 6th with a time of 51.71 seconds. His exceptional performance made him one of the standout athletes from the NWKS area at the state meet.
Meanwhile, Ryan Sramek from Rawlins County High School had an impressive showing, finishing 8th in the 1A Boys 100 Meter Dash (11.39) and 8th in the 1A Boys 200 Meter Dash (23.07), making his mark on the track.
In the 3A division, Tyler Backman of Norton Community High School also had a strong meet, placing 6th in the 3A Boys 100 Meter Dash (11.09) and 6th in the 3A Boys 200 Meter Dash (22.44).
Middle Distances: Strong Performances in the 800 and 1600
In the 1A Boys 800 Meter Run, Hans Deaton of Quinter High School finished 3rd with a time of 2:00.58, narrowly missing the top two spots. Ayston Kats of Norton Community High School posted a respectable 10th place finish in the 3A Boys 800 Meter Run (2:03.00).
The 1A Boys 1600 Meter Run saw another strong performance from Deaton, who finished 11th (4:42.06). Teammates from Quinter, Dylan Wark and Kendrik Selensky, also competed in the 1A 1600, finishing 9th and 12th respectively with times of 4:40.55 and 4:42.40.
Long Distance: Standouts in the 3200 Meters
The 1A Boys 3200 Meter Run showcased Kendrik Selensky from Quinter, who placed 8th with a time of 10:04.24. His teammate, Elliot Churchwell, also competed well, finishing 9th in 10:14.54.
In the 3A Boys 3200 Meter Run, Michael Hermosillo from Scott Community High School posted a solid performance, finishing 10th in 10:01.55.
Field Events: Big Marks from Local Athletes
In the field events, the NWKS area athletes continued to impress. Caedmon Bridges of Quinter High School finished second in the 1A Boys Discus with a throw of 171-3, showcasing his strength and technique.
In the 1A Boys Javelin, Gavin Thalheim from Northern Valley High School finished 2nd with a throw of 170-4, while George Von Leonrod of Dighton High School also had a strong showing, placing 6th with 167-8.
The 1A Boys Pole Vault saw Colt Werth from Quinter finish 5th with a vault of 13-0, while Waylon Ricker of Scott Community made his mark in the 3A division, placing 5th in the 3A Boys Pole Vault at 13-6.
Girls' Sprints: Camryn Gourley Shines for Hoxie
For the girls, Camryn Gourley of Hoxie High School put on a sprinting clinic in the 2A Girls 100 Meter Dash, finishing 4th with a time of 12.71. She also placed 8th in the 2A Girls 200 Meter Dash (26.68) and 2nd in the 2A Girls 100 Meter Hurdles (15.34), demonstrating her speed and agility across multiple events.
In the 1A Girls 400 Meter Dash, Braelyn Blackwill of Quinter finished 7th with a time of 1:03.70, while Kinleigh Wren of Scott Community High School impressed in the 3A Girls 400 Meter Dash, finishing 4th in 58.61.
Mid and Long-Distance Excellence
In the distance events, Jailyn Brandl from Greeley County High School finished 6th in the 1A Girls 1600 Meter Run (5:30.02), while her teammate, Elizabeth Weiner, followed closely behind with a 10th-place finish (5:36.55).
In the 3A Girls 1600 Meter Run, Emma Collins from Norton Community High School finished 9th (5:27.02).
Field Event Highlights: Strong Finishes Across the Board
In the 1A Girls High Jump, Aliviah Ball of Wheatland High School cleared 5-4 to finish 3rd. In the 1A Girls Triple Jump, Brenlynn Rath of Golden Plains High School placed 5th with a jump of 35-9, while Lani Speer of Dighton also made her mark, finishing 6th in 35-8.25.
Emily Bainter of Hoxie added to the local success in the 2A Girls Javelin, finishing 4th with a throw of 126-4. Her teammate Kendall Baalman finished 5th in 124-1.
Relays: High Expectations and Strong Performances
The 1A Girls 4x400 Meter Relay team from Quinter, which included athletes like Braelyn Blackwill, Lani Speer, Jailyn Brandl, and Elizabeth Weiner, ran a strong race to finish 6th in 4:13.66. In the 3A Girls 4x400 Meter Relay, Scott Community High School finished 2nd in 4:05.94, thanks to the efforts of Kinleigh Wren, Brailey Cook, and others.
