A Helping Hand: Family Resource Center Supports Northwest Kansas Families

Sometimes it’s the little things that weigh the heaviest. A bottle of shampoo. A tube of toothpaste. A pack of diapers. These are everyday essentials every family needs, yet they’re often the first items pushed aside when the grocery bill climbs too high.
That’s why LiveWell Northwest Kansas launched the Family Resource Center--a place where families across our region can find a little relief and a reminder that they are not alone.
Building a Tradition of Helping Families
LiveWell Northwest Kansas has long been committed to strengthening rural communities. For years, the organization has provided home visiting, health services, and early childhood support across 18 northwest Kansas counties. In January 2023, Governor Laura Kelly and the Kansas Department for Children and Families recognized that commitment by naming LiveWell one of only ten new Family Resource Centers in the state.
It was more than just a title. With the new designation came resources, partnerships, and a renewed mission: to walk alongside families not only with education and guidance but with the tangible goods that stretch tight budgets.
Why the Distributions Matter

During a recent interview with Kristina at NWKS Radio, Executive Director Travis Rickford and Family Resource Center Director Cheyenne Schnider explained why these events matter so much.
“We wanted to provide more concrete goods to families,” Travis said. “Everyday things-shampoo, body wash, toothbrushes- that cost money but aren’t always easy to cover when everything is so expensive.”
Cheyenne added, “There’s no application. No income limits. If you need help, please come. We know the holidays are coming and every dollar matters. If this frees up even a little extra cash for your kids, that’s worth it.”
When and Where to Find Help
The Family Resource Center’s distribution is open to everyone, no questions asked. Whether you live in Colby, Goodland, Atwood, Hoxie, or anywhere in between, you are welcome.
📍 Genesis at the Thomas County Office Complex (South Range, Colby)
📅 Second Wednesday of every month
⏰ 10 a.m. to noon
The next event will be held Wednesday, October 8. Families picking up food at Thomas County Genesis can simply stop by for supplies as well-or just come for household items alone.
More Than Just Supplies

The distributions are only one piece of the bigger picture. As a Family Resource Center, LiveWell Northwest Kansas also:
Supports families through home visiting and behavioral health counseling.
Works with preschools and childcare centers to build literacy and social skills.
Provides insurance navigation and health support for those who need guidance.
LiveWell’s mission is clear: to make northwest Kansas a healthier, stronger place to live. And sometimes that mission begins with something as simple as handing a mother a bottle of baby shampoo or giving a dad the toothbrushes he couldn’t squeeze into this month’s paycheck.
