Art Zimmerly passed away on November 1, 2025, at the Rawlins County Medical Center. He was 78 years old. He was born in Passaic, NJ on September 30, 1947, to George and Elizabeth Zimmerly, and was the oldest of three children. He grew up in Garfield, NJ and went to Montclair State University in New Jersey where he earned a Bachelor's Degree. After college Art began a career in education. He was teaching math at Randolph High School in New Jersey when he met a fellow teacher from Atwood, KS. Mary Jane Cox was a social studies teacher at the adjoining middle school when they met. Art and Mary were married on July 19, 1979. They had their only child, Kate, in 1983. Art left teaching for a career in sales working for an electronics distribution company and he and Mary moved to Allamuchy, NJ where they lived until 2006. Art spent the rest of his career in the electronics industry and later started his own small business distributing microelectronics. He also coached youth soccer.
After retiring Art and Mary moved to Parker, CO in 2006 and later moved to Atwood in 2012. He worked at Atwood Liquor for many years and was also a substitute teacher at the high school. Art is survived by his daughter Kate, his sister Joanne and his brother Will as well as many dear friends. He loved entertaining and enjoyed few things more than cooking and sharing a big elaborate meal with his friends. Despite his sometimes surly demeanor, Art loved this town and cherished the friends he made here. His sharp sense of humor and singular personality will be greatly missed.
Art's friends and family are hosting a celebration of his life on Saturday November 15, 2025, at Skyline Hall at 2pm. All are welcome. His family asks that those who wish to send flowers please consider making a donation to the McCook Humane Society or their local animal shelter instead.
