Max Gershon

This morning on the Morning Blitz, we had the pleasure of welcoming Yancey Walker, the head coach of the Colby High School girls basketball team, to discuss the successes and challenges of the current season. With an impressive record of 17-2 heading into their final regular-season game, Coach Walker shared insights on the team's growth, player dynamics, and his overall coaching philosophy.

The Power of Trust and Relationships

Coach Walker emphasized the importance of trust and love within the team. He believes that the strong relationships the senior players had built over the years played a crucial role in their current success. "They really have taken on the ability to care for each other," he said, highlighting the significance of building a supportive environment. This foundation of trust has allowed the team to focus on improvement and strive for greatness.

Learning from Success

Reflecting on their recent close win against Scott City, Coach Walker mentioned the importance of using successful moments as learning experiences. He stated, "If we can learn from when we have success instead of learning from losing, then that helps us out as much as anything." By honing their skills and working together, the Lady Eagles have demonstrated resilience and adaptability in various gameplay situations.

The Role of a Coach

Transitioning from college coaching to high school has been a fulfilling journey for Coach Walker. He noted that the willingness of his players to be coached has made the process smoother. The consistency in his approach has fostered an environment where players feel comfortable pushing themselves to improve. "I've never really had to coach effort," he said, which has allowed him to focus on refining their skills rather than motivating them to try harder.

Spotlight on Key Players

Coach Walker praised senior player Elizabeth Barton for her growth throughout her high school career, noting that she has developed into a key playmaker who not only scores but also leads the team in assists. He also highlighted the contributions of Logan Nolan, whose strong understanding of the game and commitment to practice have made her an invaluable asset to the team.

Looking Ahead

As the team prepares for their final regular-season game and the upcoming postseason, Coach Walker emphasized the need to stay focused and compartmentalized. He believes that the little things that have gotten them to this point must be magnified for continued success. "As a group, we're really good. As five individuals, we're just like everybody else," he stated, emphasizing the strength of teamwork.

Final Thoughts

Coach Yancey Walker's passion for coaching and his dedication to his players are evident in every word he shared during the interview. His approach to building trust, fostering relationships, and prioritizing teamwork has created a special environment for the Lady Eagles, setting them up for a promising postseason. As they prepare to make history in the GWAC, the entire community will be cheering them on.
