Today, August 28, we celebrate something that has shaped the way we listen, laugh, and even sing along: National Radio Commercial Day. It’s a chance to look back at the history of radio advertising, appreciate how it has changed over the decades, and recognize the businesses that trust local radio to tell their story.
A Little History
The very first radio commercial aired in 1922 on WEAF in New York City, when a real estate developer purchased 10 minutes of airtime for $50. It may have been simple, but it marked the beginning of a brand-new era in media. Soon, radio stations across the country were using commercials not only to support programming but also to connect businesses directly with their communities.
How Radio Commercials Have Changed
Back in the early days, commercials were often read live by announcers. Over time, jingles, sound effects, and creative storytelling became part of the craft. Today, commercials are as varied as the businesses they represent—some heartfelt, some humorous, some downright catchy. While television, streaming, and social media have joined the advertising world, radio commercials remain powerful because they reach people right where they live, drive, and work.
The Impact on Society
Radio commercials aren’t just ads—they’re part of our culture. They make us laugh on the morning drive, remind us of community events, and sometimes even become part of our shared memory. Local commercials, in particular, keep dollars and connections flowing right here at home, making radio one of the most community-focused media platforms.
Famous NWKS Radio Commercials
Here at NWKS Radio, we’ve had our share of memorable ads that listeners still remember (and sing) years later:
“Who you gonna call?? Roofmasters!” – A catchy jingle that’s been stuck in heads for decades.
Grinnell Lockers’ 800 number ad – Produced by Paul Heskett, this tune is still remembered by folks who grew up hearing it on the air.
Commercials like these become more than ads—they become part of the soundtrack of our lives in Northwest Kansas.
