Cimarron Shuts Out Colby in GWAC Opener

COLBY - The Colby Eagles struggled to find their offensive rhythm Friday night as Cimarron handed them a 20-0 loss in the Great West Activities Conference opener at Dennen Field.

Colby entered the game with momentum after a 31-0 victory over Southwestern Heights the previous week, but turnovers, penalties and an inconsistent passing game prevented the Eagles from finding the end zone.

The loss dropped Colby to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the GWAC, while Cimarron improved to 1-2 and 1-2 in conference play.

Cimarron struck first after Colby recovered a McCoy Nash fumble on the Bluejays' opening possession.

The Eagles converted a fourth down on a Neale Morrison quarterback keeper but later turned the ball over on downs following an unsuccessful fake punt attempt.

The Bluejays capitalized on their next possession.

Quarterback Coulter Dohrmann connected with Isayah Barranca for a 36-yard pass to move Cimarron into the red zone. One play later, Dohrmann found tight end Evan Tatro for a 17-yard touchdown, giving the Bluejays a 6-0 lead.

Cimarron continued to pressure the Colby defense in the second quarter, but the Eagles benefited from another Bluejays turnover. After a 43-yard pass to Barranca moved Cimarron inside the Colby 10-yard line, Dohrmann fumbled, and Colby recovered.

The Eagles couldn't turn the opportunity into points.

Cimarron then extended its lead with a 15-yard screen pass from Dohrmann to Nash, who found the end zone for a 13-0 advantage.

Colby put together its best drive of the first half on the ensuing possession, moving to the Cimarron 30-yard line. However, Morrison's pass over the middle was intercepted by Dohrmann, who returned the ball to the Colby 32.

Cimarron threatened to score again before halftime, but Dohrmann fumbled for the second time, allowing Colby to recover as the clock expired.

The Bluejays took control in the third quarter with a lengthy scoring drive. Dohrmann repeatedly found openings in the Colby defense before connecting with Nash on a 13-yard screen pass for his second touchdown of the night. The eight-play, 77-yard drive increased Cimarron's lead to 20-0.

Colby responded with its best offensive possession of the game, highlighted by a 34-yard Morrison run in which he broke multiple tackles. The drive ended, however, when Morrison threw his second interception of the night, this time picked off by Ethan Sonday.

Cimarron missed a 35-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, but Colby couldn't generate any offensive momentum. The Eagles managed only one first down during the remainder of the game before Cimarron closed out the shutout.

Morrison finished 6 of 13 passing for 62 yards and two interceptions. He also led Colby in rushing with 71 yards on 10 carries. Gage Krohn added 33 yards on 12 carries, while Nathan Cates caught two passes for 23 yards.

Cimarron finished with 360 total yards, including 277 passing yards. Dohrmann completed 19 of 28 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns. Nash contributed 80 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Colby committed 14 penalties, including 11 on offense, and finished with 172 total yards.

The Eagles will look to rebound next week as they continue conference play on the road in Hugoton.
