Colby Fire Department Offering Free Smoke Alarm Checks on October 31

October is Fire Prevention Month, and the Colby Fire Department is wrapping up a busy month of fire safety education with its annual Smoke Alarm Saturday on October 31, 2026.

The department is offering residents a simple way to make sure their homes are protected by providing free smoke alarm inspections and battery replacements.

On Smoke Alarm Saturday, members of the Colby Fire Department will visit participating homes to check smoke alarms, replace batteries and make sure the devices are working properly.

The service is completely free! Residents only need to provide their own batteries or pay for the batteries used. The department will also have a limited number of new smoke alarms available for purchase and can install them for residents who need replacements or additional alarms.

Even better, once you're on the department's list, firefighters will contact you annually to schedule another smoke alarm check. It's a great way to stay on top of home fire safety without having to remember to schedule it yourself.

To get on the list for Smoke Alarm Saturday, call the Colby Fire Department at 785-460-4454.

How Many Smoke Alarms Should You Have?

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), working smoke alarms are one of the most important tools for protecting your family in the event of a house fire.

Here are a few important recommendations:

  • Every bedroom: Install a smoke alarm inside each bedroom or sleeping area.

  • Outside sleeping areas: Place additional alarms in hallways or areas outside bedrooms.

  • Every level: Have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home, including the basement.

  • Test monthly: Press the test button on each alarm at least once a month.

  • Replace old alarms: Smoke alarms should generally be replaced every 10 years.

  • Check batteries: Replace batteries as recommended by the manufacturer, or when an alarm signals a low battery. Some alarms have sealed 10-year batteries that aren't replaceable.

For the best protection, interconnected smoke alarms are recommended so that when one sounds, they all sound.

A Month Dedicated to Fire Safety

The Colby Fire Department has been busy throughout October sharing important fire safety information and helping educate the community about preventing fires and protecting families.

Smoke Alarm Saturday is another way local firefighters are going above and beyond to keep Colby residents safe.

A working smoke alarm can provide precious extra time to escape a fire, especially when everyone in the home is sleeping.

Don't wait until there's an emergency to find out your smoke alarm isn't working. Take advantage of this community service and give the Colby Fire Department a call at 785-460-4454 to get on the list for Saturday, October 31.
