Dighton in Lane County is facing some serious challenges with finances and declining enrollment. Last Tuesday, school leaders there held a community meeting to discuss their lower enrollment and monetary losses according to KSN.
There’s a chance they have to close down their grade school and move those students to the high school and a district office.
Superintendent Mathew Hendricks said “We have several classrooms that are open at the high school. We also have a district office that was originally built to be a pre-K, kindergarten building, and so we would go ahead and move our pre-K/kindergarten into our district office, and then, the rest of the kids would get moved into open classrooms.”
That will happen if they don’t pass a potential bond to fix their broken HVAC system, which the district is putting money into.
Families of the district can find a survey on the next steps in the online student portal. The district will review the feedback before deciding how to move forward.
If the district wants to put a bond on the ballot before the spring, it must make a decision before Dec. 8.
