During this week’s Good Neighbor Hour, Sherman County Community Development Director Bert Moser shared several updates highlighting continued growth, new business activity, and community investment across Goodland and Sherman County .
One of the biggest ongoing developments is momentum surrounding the Golden Waves Grain project, which was recently introduced to the community. The project is expected to have regional impact, serving a roughly 140-mile radius and eventually bringing an estimated 140 jobs to the area. As planning continues, housing availability is already becoming a key focus, with local leaders encouraging conversations around duplex construction, home renovations, and new residential opportunities to prepare for future workforce needs .
New Business Opening Downtown
A new small business is set to open its doors later this month in downtown Goodland. Saddle & Swoon Book Company will officially co-locate with Dizzy Donuts, offering new and used books across a wide range of genres including children’s books, romance, thrillers, fantasy, and more. A grand opening and ribbon cutting are scheduled for Saturday, January 31, from 5 to 7 p.m., with samples, raffle prizes, and a preview of Dizzy Donuts’ expanded menu planned for the evening
Housing and Childcare Initiatives
Moser also highlighted several programs aimed at supporting long-term growth. A new home-based childcare recruitment grant, funded through the Patterson Family Foundation and administered by the Northwest Kansas Innovation Center, is now available to eligible residents in Sherman County. The program helps individuals start licensed childcare businesses from their homes, addressing a critical community need
In addition, housing assistance programs remain available for both single-family homes and duplex construction, with incentives designed to ease building costs and expand rental options in Goodland.
Community Events and Quality of Life
Beyond development projects, Moser emphasized the importance of community events and partnerships. The Sherman County Theatre Centennial Celebration continues with free monthly movie showings leading up to the theater’s 100th anniversary later this year. Other upcoming events include fundraisers for childcare initiatives, sporting clay shoots at the Goodland Gun Club, and continued planning for summer events such as concerts, car shows, and downtown festivals
As Moser noted, all of these efforts—from business recruitment to housing, childcare, and community events—work together to strengthen Goodland’s economy and quality of life while preparing for future growth.
