Fast and Furious Storm Slams Brewster with Heavy Rain, Wind, and Hail

Brewster, KS was hit hard Friday evening as a fast-moving severe thunderstorm brought torrential rain, high winds, and hail to the area.


According to NWKS Radio listeners, the storm dropped 2.5 inches of rain in just under an hour, with the heaviest downpour lasting about 30 minutes. The National Weather Service in Goodland had issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. CDT, and the storm lived up to its billing.

Listeners reported hail and powerful winds that left their mark on the small community. Trees were damaged and debris littered the streets, while yards and roadways quickly flooded. One listener shared a striking photo showing the cross in front of the Brewster Methodist Church leaning over, pushed by the strong gusts.

Power issues were also noted, with some residents experiencing outages or flickering electricity during the height of the storm.


Travelers along Interstate 70 weren’t spared either. Around 7:45 p.m., NWKS Radio received reports of two semis possibly blown over by the winds near Goodland and Brewster. Another listener traveling on I-70 said traffic was rerouted off the interstate into Brewster until the storm had cleared. There were also reports of the highway being temporarily shut down due to the dangerous conditions.

While the storm was relatively small in size, it left a big impact on Brewster and surrounding areas in a short amount of time. Cleanup efforts are expected to continue into the weekend as residents deal with the aftermath.
