On a recent edition of the Good Neighbor Hour on 730 Goodland's Gold KLOE and RockIt 102.5, Rollie Halligan sat down with Goodland High School Principal Shane Hollren to talk about an exciting proposal that could shape the future of career education in the district—a brand-new Career and Technical Education (CTE) building.
Hollren shared that the school is off to a strong start on the vision for the facility, with the goal of better serving students with modern, hands-on training opportunities in fields like welding, auto body, and the arts. “We’ve got 25 to 30 students going over to the tech college every year,” he said. “They don’t catch the bug for these careers without being in a CTE building.”
The current building is nearing 50 years old, and instead of patching it up, the school is looking to build something new—just west of the high school office—on a lot where houses once stood. The new building would nearly double the footprint of the existing space, with modern aesthetics and functionality built to last another 50 years.
The project hinges on a vote this November. Hollren emphasized that it won’t raise taxes—instead, it simply continues the existing quarter-cent sales tax that’s been in place since 2013, which helped fund other district improvements like the Max Jones Fieldhouse and iPad initiatives. “It’s smart planning,” Hollren said. “We're not asking for more—we’re asking to keep what we already have.”
The district is also exploring grants and potential community sponsorships to help furnish the space with top-tier equipment. As for the current CTE building, no bulldozers yet—it could be repurposed for seasonal storage, snow removal equipment, or even guest locker rooms for athletic events.
The biggest takeaway? “If you think we don’t need a new CTE building,” Hollren said, “come tour the current one with me.”
Stay tuned for more information as the project develops—and don’t forget to mark your calendar for the November ballot.
