🎃 Halloween Safety Tips from Colby Police Lieutenant Jared Lange

ree

Halloween is all about costumes, candy, and community fun — but before the trick-or-treating begins, Colby Police Lieutenant Jared Lange stopped by the NWKS Radio studio to share some friendly (and important!) reminders to keep the night safe for kids and adults alike.

“Halloween’s a big one — everyone’s excited, kids get amped up, and it’s easy to forget safety,” Lange told host Joel Navarro. “We just want everyone to have fun and make it home safely.”

👻 Trick-or-Treating Safety

  • Stick together: “Travel in groups — don’t go alone,” Lange said. Even if you know the neighborhood, there’s safety in numbers.

  • Be seen: Kids love dark, spooky costumes, but reflective or brightly colored gear can prevent accidents. “It’s Friday night, people are out driving, and visibility is key,” he added.

  • Check your candy: The old rule still applies — don’t eat it until it’s inspected at home. Toss anything opened or suspicious. “We’ve been fortunate in Colby for 21 years with no issues, but we always stay cautious,” said Lange.

  • Parent candy tax: Once the candy’s checked, parents, of course, can claim their safety tax — 50 percent sounds fair! 😄

🚔 For the Grown-Ups

Halloween isn’t just for the kids — plenty of adults celebrate, too. But Lange reminds everyone to plan ahead if you’re enjoying adult beverages.

“Do not drink and drive. Find a designated driver, call a friend, stay the night — just be safe. Don’t make me do my job.”

Even in small towns, there are always ways to get a ride. “We’ve got folks willing to help — just set it up before you go out,” Lange said.

One bad decision behind the wheel can change lives forever. Lange shared that a DUI can cost thousands and cause lasting consequences. “It’s not worth it,” he said. “And imagine if someone got hurt — that’s something you’d carry forever.”

🎃 Join the Fun, Stay Safe

Officer Lange will be out and about around town during Halloween night, helping keep the community safe. He’s also quick to point out that the Colby Police Department is hiring, for anyone ready to serve and protect the community.

“Come apply! We’re always looking for good people,” he said with a smile.

So whether you’re heading downtown for trunk-or-treat, taking the kids door-to-door, or celebrating with friends, remember — have fun, stay aware, and make this Halloween another safe and spooky success in Northwest Kansas.
