Homecoming Tradition Meets Small-Town Rivalry: Goodland Cowboys Set to Take on Colby Eagles Tonight

GOODLAND, Kan. | It's homecoming in Goodland, and there's no bigger way to celebrate than with a showdown against a longtime rival. The Goodland Cowboys will welcome the Colby Eagles tonight in a rivalry matchup that brings out the pride, tradition, and competitive spirit of two neighboring communities.
With Goodland and Colby separated by just 40 miles and years of competition in the same league, this is more than just another football game. It's a rivalry that means something to both towns, and tonight, the Cowboys get to celebrate homecoming on their home turf.
But before kickoff, Friday was all about celebrating the traditions that make Goodland High School special.

A Parade Full of Cowboy Spirit
The celebration kicked off with the Goodland Homecoming Parade, traveling from Max Jones Fieldhouse down Main Street. Elementary school students and community members lined the streets to cheer on the parade, filling downtown with Cowboy pride.
From the parade route to the people gathered along the sidewalks, the community showed what homecoming is all about: school spirit, hometown tradition, and generations of Cowboys coming together to celebrate.

GHS Pep Rally Brings the Energy
Following the parade, the celebration moved to Max Jones Fieldhouse for the GHS Homecoming Pep Rally, where students, alumni, families, and fans gathered to fire up the Cowboys ahead of tonight's big game.
The cheerleaders got things started with chants, cheers, and a dance routine that quickly energized the crowd. Class chants and plenty of Cowboy spirit kept the excitement going throughout the rally.
One of the special moments of the afternoon came with the recognition of the Goodland High School Class of 1976. Members of the class were honored as they looked back on their high school years, including memories of major snowstorms that pushed their graduation back by a week and an unforgettable incident involving curtains in the school auditorium catching fire.
The stories served as a reminder that while the years pass, the memories and traditions of being a Goodland Cowboy last a lifetime.
Senior Parents, Jumping Juniors, and Plenty of Laughs
The fun continued with the 2027 senior parents' skit. Parents took the floor holding oversized, blown-up pictures of their children's faces. Some featured the seniors as young kids, while others showed more recent versions of the students, giving the crowd plenty to smile about.
The fall sports coaches also took their turn in front of the crowd, recognizing the season's athletes and adding to the homecoming excitement.
Then came another beloved Goodland tradition: Jumping Juniors!
For those unfamiliar with the tradition, the juniors decorate and name pillowcase-bodied characters before taking the floor for their routine. It's a homecoming favorite that brings creativity, personality, and plenty of entertainment to the pep rally.

Cowboys Capture the Colby Eagle
With the rivalry game just hours away, the Goodland football players added some friendly competition of their own.
The team put together a video skit featuring the escape of the Colby Eagle mascot. But the story didn't end there. The players brought the captured mascot onto the gym floor and transformed it into a Cowboy!
It was a playful nod to the rivalry and a crowd-pleasing moment that helped set the stage for tonight's matchup.
The cheerleaders returned to lead more class chants and cheers, sending the crowd off with plenty of energy and one final reminder: it's homecoming, and the Cowboys are ready to go!
