KDOT Partners with Law Enforcement for 'Speeding Catches Up with You' Campaign

Press Release from Kansas Department of Transportation

As the summer travel season swings into full gear and thousands of families take to Kansas roadways, the Kansas Department of Transportation urges drivers to obey posted speed limits.

To reinforce safe driving habits, drivers will see increased local and state law enforcement presence on Kansas roads from July 7-15 as part of the national Speeding Catches up with You enforcement campaign.

"Speeding is an aggressive and dangerous behavior,” said KDOT Behavioral Safety Manager Gary Herman. “Not following speed limits and driving too fast for road conditions endangers everyone on the road. There is never a good reason to speed — whether you’re running late or frustrated by traffic. It’s simply not worth the risk.”

Speed limits are calculated to keep all road users safe. Every mile per hour driven over the limit increases the risk of a crash and the severity of resulting injuries. According to preliminary Kansas 2025 crash data, 20% of people killed and 39% of those injured in crashes were speeding.

Not following posted speed limits is not only against the law, but it also creates serious risks for everyone on the road, including:

  • Greater potential for loss of vehicle control

  • Reduced effectiveness of occupant protection equipment

  • Increased stopping distance after a driver perceives a hazard

  • Significant economic costs associated with speed-related crashes

  • Increased fuel consumption and higher travel costs
