The Lady Eagles entered Feb. 21 as the undefeated 11-0 leaders of the Greater Western Activities Conference, and with Hugoton in town on Senior Night they had no intention of losing one. They put on a clinic defensively holding the Hugoton Eagles to 31 points in the game, while Colby scored 55 to end their regular season at the Colby Event Center.
Colby jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter with senior Alisabeth Barton playing the aggressor. She was attacking the basket often, scoring 12 points in the opening quarter, but also collected two fouls and had to sit for a long period in the first half. Senior Logan Nolan hit 3 big three-pointers in the period to push the Colby’s lead to twenty, 3-23.
The lead dwindled by only one point in the second quarter, but Colby was still in control for the first half of this game. Senior Brenn Stanley hit a couple of buckets, as well as junior Sadie Cheney to keep Colby ahead 14-33.
The third quarter didn’t change much for Hugoton, they were again outscored by Colby 6-18, and the offense was rolling. Nolan hit another three-pointer, followed by Barton getting one as well. Junior Shaylee Holzmeister fought her way to two trips to the free-throw line, while sophomore Maddie McCarty was able to get in on the mix with a bucket. Colby had sealed the deal early in this one leading Hugoton 20-51 going into the final quarter.
Midway through the fourth quarter, head coach Yancey Walker pulled his seniors from the court to a standing ovation one last time at home in the regular season. Colby ended the game with a win 31-55.
Barton led Colby with 19 points, followed by Nolan with 14 points, Stanley had 10, while Cheney finished with 6 points, and Holzmeister, McCarty, and Austin Gerstberger all scored 2 points each.
Next Colby will start their sub-state bracket with a home game at the Colby Event Center on Feb. 27 against Nickerson High school.
