Lightning Causing Small Grass and Field Fires

Cheyenne-Rawlins-Sherman County Emergency Management Facebook posted 7/27/26 at 5:30 CST:

"There is alot of sharp lightning across the area especially in northern Cheyenne and Rawlins Counties St. Francis, Bird City, and McDonald Fire crews have been working several small grass and field fires.

Please keep an eye out and be prepared!"

"A STRONG THUNDERSTORM WILL IMPACT NORTHEASTERN CHEYENNE AND NORTHWESTERN RAWLINS COUNTIES IN NORTHWESTERN KANSAS...SOUTHWESTERN HITCHCOCK AND SOUTHEASTERN DUNDY COUNTIES IN SOUTHWESTERN NEBRASKA THROUGH 445 PM MDT/545 PM CDT/... At 412 PM MDT/512 PM CDT/, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 8 miles southeast of Benkelman. This thunderstorm was nearly stationary. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 55 mph and penny size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to outdoor objects is possible. This storm will remain over mainly rural areas of northeastern Cheyenne and northwestern Rawlins Counties in northwestern Kansas, southwestern Hitchcock and southeastern Dundy Counties in southwestern Nebraska, including the following locations... Max, Blakeman, and Beardsley. "
