A Wakeeney man was seriously injured late Friday afternoon in a motorcycle crash on U.S. Highway 283, approximately two miles north of Interstate 70 in Trego County.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash report, the accident occurred at 4:15 p.m. on November 14. The driver, identified as 56-year-old Russell L. McBryde, was traveling northbound on U283 when he suddenly slammed on his brakes for an unknown reason. The abrupt stop caused McBryde to lay his 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle down on its right side.

The motorcycle slid a short distance, pinning McBryde’s right leg underneath. He sustained suspected serious injuries and was transported to Trego County – Lemke Memorial Hospital in Wakeeney.

The crash report notes that McBryde was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. He also had no insurance listed for the motorcycle.

The bike was removed from the scene by 4B Towing and taken to a tow lot.

No other vehicles were involved, and the incident was not a hit-and-run and did not involve a police pursuit. The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the sudden braking.
