NWKS Radio Connects with Students at Wallace County College & Career Fair

NWKS Radio was proud to spend the day in Sharon Springs at the College and Career Fair hosted inside the gym at Wallace County High School. The event brought together colleges, technical schools, local businesses, and community partners for a meaningful day focused on helping students picture their futures.

After the fair wrapped up, NWKS Radio’s Kristina caught up with Lisa Deweese, guidance counselor at Wallace County Schools, to reflect on a big day. Deweese said the turnout was exactly what organizers hoped for, with strong community support, a great mix of nearby community colleges and tech schools, and businesses showcasing the many career paths available right here in Northwest Kansas.

Students from multiple schools and age groups took part, including Tribune (Greeley County), Weskan, and Wallace County students ranging from preschool all the way through seniors. Deweese explained that the fair plays an important role in students’ Individual Plans of Study required by the State of Kansas, giving them hands-on exposure to careers they can pursue locally or beyond.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing older students paired with younger ones as they visited booths together. That approach helped younger students feel more comfortable asking questions, while also giving older students a chance to step into leadership roles. The result was genuine conversations, curiosity, and plenty of confidence-building moments throughout the gym.

NWKS Radio had a great time talking with more than 350 students about what makes radio special and local. Chad and Kristina shared how many different careers exist within radio, from on-air talent and sports broadcasting to news, sales, marketing, and social media. They also welcomed several on-air guests during the morning from the event, bringing the excitement straight to the airwaves.

Looking ahead, the College and Career Fair will rotate locations, with next year’s event planned for Greeley County and Wallace County set to host again the following year. Businesses, colleges, or organizations interested in participating can contact the school directly when booth registration opens.

A big thank-you to USD 241 Wallace County Schools, Tribune County Schools, and Weskan Schools for sharing their students and making this event such a success. NWKS Radio loves getting out into our communities and helping local kids see what’s possible—because being local is what we do best. 🎙️💙
