Press Release on Cheylin School Lockdown Today

April 30, 2026


Today, at approx. 10:30 am Cheylin High School, in Bird City, received a phone call stating a gunman was on their way to the school.


Cheylin school officials notified local law enforcement and activated the school crisis emergency plans. The school was immediately locked down and secured in coordination with local law enforcement and emergency response agencies out of an abundance of caution as all threats are taken seriously.


All Cheylin students and staff were accounted for and immediately moved to safety. School officials ultimately decided to dismiss school early, and all students were reunified with parents.


Local law enforcement determined there was no active threat and the incident remains under investigation. No further details will be released at this time.


“Superintendent Reece commended the Cheylin community on their calm and cooperative efforts in keeping everyone safe as the school carried out their emergency procedures and response in coordination with Cheyenne County emergency response agencies.”


The school will have counseling services available to students in the coming days.

Agencies involved: USD 103, Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office, Cheyenne County Dispatch, Bird City Fire Dept, Cheyenne County Emergency Management, Cheyenne County EMS, Rawlins County Sheriff’s Office, and Kansas Highway Patrol.
