This Saturday, August 16th, the Colby Event Center will be buzzing with curiosity, creativity, and just a little bit of rocket fuel. From 1:00 to 4:30 p.m., Rocks and Rockets returns—an out-of-this-world event for kids, parents, grandparents, and anyone who still has a bit of “kid at heart” left in them.
We caught up with Sarah Lamm, founder of Rocks and Rockets, on NWKS Radio to talk about what makes this one-of-a-kind science celebration so special.
“If you have a child who’s adventurous, loves unique things, and whose mind goes a thousand miles an hour, this is the perfect place for them to explore and learn,” Sarah says.

Hands-On Fun for All Ages
This isn’t your average science fair. This year’s event features:
🪨 Geologists, physicists, and chemists from Kansas State University
🌦 The National Weather Service with fascinating meteorology displays
🪐 A planetarium for a breathtaking cosmic experience
🗺 Giant Mars maps you can actually walk on—just remember your socks!
A Family Passion Project
Rocks and Rockets isn’t run by some giant corporation—it’s a labor of love.
“This is actually an event my family and I came up with,” Sarah explains. “We wanted to give back to Colby, and a geology group grant made it possible. Honestly, a lot of it is planned in my mom’s basement!”
Over the past four years, Rocks and Rockets has grown to draw visitors from all over—even as far as five hours away near Wichita. And with free-flowing creativity, hands-on science, and fun for all ages, it’s no wonder people make the trip.
Kick Off the School Year with a Bang
The timing couldn’t be better—right before school starts back up. Sarah says it’s a great way to “rejuvenate” those summer brains and get kids excited to learn again.
