Christmas magic filled the KXXX Radio studios Tuesday night as Santa Claus himself made a special stop at NWKS Radio to spend two unforgettable hours on the air with Joel Navarro. From 5:30 to 7:30, listeners on 100.3 The Ride and FlyOver Country 97.9 tuned in as Santa read letters, answered questions, and spread holiday cheer across Northwest Kansas.
Santa read more than 200 letters from kids throughout the listening area, including Oakley, Rexford, Oberlin, Atwood, Brewster, and Colby. Teachers from schools across the region helped collect the letters and sent them in care of NWKS Radio, making sure each one found its way to the North Pole’s busiest visitor of the season.
Each letter was read with care as Santa admired colorful drawings, answered thoughtful questions, and made every child feel special. Along the way, Santa explained how he travels down chimneys, how reindeer really do fly, and which treats the reindeer look forward to most on Christmas Eve.
The wish lists were just as magical and memorable — hoverboards, live animals including cats, dogs, axolotls, and even a zebra, plenty of Grinch-themed items, skincare products, and supplies for baby dolls. Many kids also shared whether they’d been good or bad this year, with some being impressively honest. A few admitted they’d been “kind of good and kind of bad,” and one even included a percentage breakdown of both.
This marked the third year Santa has donned his infamous red suit and joined NWKS Radio on the air, but it was a first for Joel Navarro, who was thrilled to interview the famous Santa Claus in person. The excitement was contagious, and it showed — it was a record listening night as kids, parents, and community members tuned in together to share the experience.
There were doubts Santa could make it through all 200-plus letters in just two hours, but in true Christmas fashion, he finished the final letter with just two minutes to spare before the special wrapped up.
NWKS Radio would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the local teachers who helped make this possible, to the kids who shared their letters and holiday wishes, and of course, to Santa Claus for taking time out of his incredibly busy schedule to spread joy across the NWKS Radio listening area. 🎄🎅
