COLBY - The Colby Eagles’ playoff hopes came to an end Friday night as Scott City pulled away in the second half for a 27-0 victory in a Class 3A District 8 matchup at Dennen Field.

Colby’s defense kept the game close early, but the Eagles struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities and Scott City found its rhythm after halftime. The loss dropped Colby to 1-7 overall and 0-6 in Great West Activities Conference play, while the Eagles will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2022.

Colby opened the game with a promising defensive stand. Scott City drove to the Eagles’ 4-yard line on its opening possession, but a penalty erased a touchdown and Colby stopped the Beavers on fourth down.

The Eagles then put together a lengthy drive that carried over from the first quarter. Starting at their own 6-yard line, Colby moved 82 yards on 15 plays, including a 20-yard pass from Neale Morrison to Jensen Barnett. However, a penalty wiped out a potential touchdown, and Morrison was sacked on fourth-and-goal to end the drive.

Scott City broke the scoreless tie on its next possession. Gradin Edwards, making his first career start with Drew Metzger sidelined by injury, connected with Adrian Garcia for an 84-yard touchdown pass to give the Beavers a 6-0 lead.

Both defenses settled in for the remainder of the first half. Scott City stopped another Colby drive inside its own territory, while the Eagles forced multiple punts and stopped the Beavers on downs after a 10-play possession reached the Colby 25.

Colby attempted a hook-and-ladder play to close the half, with Nathan Cates pitching the ball to Sean Wederski for a 20-yard gain, but time expired before the Eagles could threaten again. Scott City carried a 6-0 lead into halftime.

The Beavers extended their advantage early in the third quarter. After a short Colby punt gave Scott City possession at the Eagles’ 42, Edwards scored on an 11-yard run. A successful two-point conversion pushed the lead to 14-0.

Colby appeared poised to answer, moving to the Scott City 34, but another penalty and a fourth-down stop ended the drive. Scott City then put together an eight-play, 50-yard possession capped by Easton Eisenhour’s 3-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0.

Reid Felker added a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, finishing a 57-yard drive and giving the Beavers a 27-0 lead.

The Eagles had trouble generating offense late, and two fourth-quarter interceptions by Morrison helped Scott City close out the shutout.

Scott City finished with 354 total yards, including 204 passing and 150 rushing. Edwards completed eight of 18 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 67 yards and another score. Garcia caught one pass for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Colby totaled 197 yards, including 110 passing and 87 rushing. Morrison completed 10 of 22 passes for 110 yards and two interceptions. Wederski led the Eagles with 52 rushing yards on 11 carries, while Barnett caught four passes for 53 yards.

Colby will close its season Thursday night at home against Nickerson, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
