Semi Crash Shuts Down Eastbound I-70 in Thomas County Early Tuesday

An early morning crash involving two semi trucks shut down eastbound Interstate 70 for approximately three hours Tuesday.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol Crash Log, the accident occurred at 1:14 a.m. on February 24 at milepost 65 eastbound, about five miles west of U.S. Highway 83.


The report states a 2017 Freightliner semi driven by 56-year-old Jacobo S. Guzman Huizel of Greeley, Colorado, was traveling eastbound at approximately 60 miles per hour when it was struck on the left rear of its trailer by a 2019 Freightliner semi driven by 34-year-old Harry Bhardwaj of Lawrenceville, Georgia.

The impact caused Vehicle 1 to come to rest on the south shoulder facing east and blocking both eastbound lanes.


Guzman Huizel reported no apparent injury. Bhardwaj was transported to Logan County Health Services with suspected minor injuries.


The roadway between Colby and Oakley remained closed for roughly three hours while crews worked to clear the scene.
