Today, we talked to Kansas Senator Jerry Moran about his recent visits in Northwest Kansas. Here's a few notes from the interview, which will air tomorrow on KXXX.
At the health center, he discussed the Big Beautiful Bill and its potential impact on Medicare. Moran also walked main street in Bird City and visited McDonald and Cheylin High School in the district and spoke to students.
He also discussed agricultural issues, mentioning "there's lots of concern of agricultural commodity prices, input costs and the challenges we have particularly with grain sorghum and other crops in Kansas where the markets are pretty minimal and grain piles on the ground are growing."
Moran spoke to how impressed he was with the students and teachers of Cheylin HS: "I came away from Cheylin thinking 'yes this is a small school and maybe not all the things that are available to kids at larger schools in Kansas are available to these kids,'" Moran said, "but there's other things that are really special about getting an education at a smaller school.'"
He added on that thought with more praise of his experience there: "I loved every minute of it and I've come away from there thinking the future is pretty darn bright."
"We need more teachers, there's a shortage, in particular we need more teachers in the agricultural space," Moran said, highlighting the need for more agricultural education in rural spaces. He also noted Cheylin does a good job of educating their students in that area.
Moran ended by mentioning the need to keep the doors of Kansas hospitals open, that the Reconciliation Bill will provide more resources to do that and will help prop up healthcare in Kansas.
