GOODLAND, Kan. — The season of giving is right around the corner, and in Sherman County, that means one of the most anticipated community events of the year — Match Day. The Sherman County Community Foundation will host its 10th annual Match Day on Tuesday, December 2, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Price Convention Center in Goodland.
During a visit with Rollie Halligan on the Good Neighbor Hour, Foundation Director Tina Wollack shared how Match Day continues to grow and strengthen the community year after year.
🌻 Ten Years of Giving — and Growing
Since the first Match Day in 2016, the Sherman County Community Foundation and its partners — including the Dane G. Hansen Foundation and the Patterson Family Foundation — have brought in an impressive $2.5 million for local projects and organizations.
“That total includes $1.3 million in personal donations from individuals right here in our community,” Wollack said. “You can see the impact all over town — from new lighting along the Topside Trail to upgrades at the West Elementary basketball courts. It’s amazing what people working together can accomplish.”
This year’s Match Day will feature 34 to 35 participating funds, up from 26 last year. Each organization receives matching dollars from the foundation for every donation given that day.
🏡 Community Projects That Shine
Wollack noted that one of her favorite parts of Match Day is seeing the results — visible improvements that enhance everyday life in Goodland.
“When I drove down Arcade and saw those trail lights glowing before sunrise, I thought, ‘That’s Match Day at work,’” she said.
Other projects supported through the foundation include improvements at city parks, the West School basketball courts, and the Welcome Back Grant, which helps local professionals return to Sherman County. The first recipient, teacher Dawson Raymer, recently moved back to Goodland with the program’s support.
🍞 New Location, New Energy
To celebrate the 10th anniversary, Match Day is moving to a new, larger venue — the Price Convention Center at Northwest Tech.
“We’ve loved holding it at the library for nine years,” Wollack said. “But this year we wanted to make it bigger and more donor-friendly.”
The event will feature coffee and pastries in the morning, soups for lunch, and a welcoming come-and-go atmosphere throughout the day as community members stop in to make their donations.
👧 Inspiring the Next Generation
A new addition to this year’s Match Day involves local students. Thanks to a sponsorship from Outdoor Bank, each of Goodland’s 65 sixth graders will receive $20 to donate to the project of their choice.
“I’m going to visit their classrooms ahead of time to teach them about giving and philanthropy,” Wollack explained. “They’ll come to Match Day and choose where to give their money — maybe to one group or split it among several. I think it’s so important to show kids how their giving can make a real impact.”
💬 How to Give
Donations can be made in person at the Price Convention Center during event hours or online through the foundation’s new website, ShermanCountyGives.org.
Every contribution — whether it’s $5 or $500 — helps support local organizations, projects, and initiatives that strengthen Sherman County.
“This event is truly about community,” Wollack said. “It’s neighbors helping neighbors, building pride, and keeping our county strong.”
