The Sherman County Economic Development office is kicking off another round of its popular “Building Brilliance” business incentive — a program designed to help local businesses upgrade, improve, and shine a little brighter.
Economic Development Director Bert Mosier joined The Good Neighbor Hour to share details, and the big news is that the program is now open citywide, not just downtown.
Helping Businesses Make a Great First Impression
Last year’s program helped several local businesses transform their storefronts and signage. A few of the funded projects included:
Jacque’s Hallmark: Window replacements that made a noticeable impact
Goodland Furniture & Sleep Center: New sign installation
Rod Cooper: A new canvas awning for one of his buildings
This year, $22,000 is available to distribute, and each approved project can receive up to $5,000. Businesses must provide a 25% match, but Mosier says the application is simple, quick, and designed to help as many local businesses as possible.
Who Can Apply?
Any business located within Goodland city limits—whether downtown or along Highways 24 and 27—is eligible to apply. Improvements may include:
Signage
Exterior facades
Front entrances
Windows, awnings, and other upgrades that improve curb appeal
A review committee will evaluate applications, and funding announcements are expected before the end of the year.
Deadline Approaching
Applications are open now and will close on December 10. Forms are available on the Sherman County Economic Development website (thetopsideofkansas.org) under the “News” or “Business” section, and will also be featured on the front page for easy access.
If you need help locating or downloading the application, Mosier encourages you to reach out.

With several new businesses opening, four Network Kansas loans currently in process, and more local entrepreneurs exploring expansion opportunities, Mosier says “there’s a lot going on” in Goodland — and programs like Building Brilliance help keep that momentum strong.
