Students Celebrate Walk and Roll to School Day
Press Release from the Kansas Department of Transportation

Kansas schools will celebrate Walk and Roll to School Day on Oct. 7, with support from Kansas Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School program. This annual event promotes safe behaviors and community connection by encouraging students and families to walk, bike and/or roll to school.
October is also National Pedestrian Safety Month. Pedestrians of all ages are vulnerable, especially children because of their unique physical and cognitive abilities. Increasing awareness of people walking and using other active modes helps improve roadway safety for all.
Currently, 30 school districts are participating on Oct. 7 (see list below). Others are encouraged to register for the event and download free materials at https://saferoutes.ksdot.gov/kwrsd. Materials include flyers, banners, signs, pedestrian safety fact sheets and more.
Roadway safety tips include:
Pedestrians: Stay focused, make eye contact with drivers and cross streets at marked crosswalks and walk on sidewalks when available.
Drivers: Slow down, watch for pedestrians, yield to pedestrians in or at crosswalks, and never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk. Use caution when backing up or in hard-to-see conditions.
All: Follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals.
