Thomas County Landfill is Shut Down to the Public

Thomas County Landfill is shut down except for commercial use. On July 23rd, a post on the Thomas County Landfill posted simply: "Due to current operation issues the landfill is currently closed to the public until further notice"

July 28th, Thomas County Commissioner posted this on his personal Facebook page about the closing:

"The Commission is fully aware of the major inconvenience to the public due to the temporary closure of the Thomas County Landfill.

As soon as the former Landfill Supervisor submitted his resignation to be effective July 22nd, solicitation for a replacement was placed on the County's website and a few days later in the official County Newspaper.

Two landfill employees subsequently resigned effective July 22nd, reducing Landfill personnel to one person.

Once the Commission received applications, interviews were immediately conducted, resulting in the hiring of a Supervisor and one Operator, both who had to give proper notice to their then employers.

With other County Staff, Commissioner Luedke, and the current Landfill Employee, we are able to take Municipal waste but not from the general public.

The new Supervisor is conducting interviews for applicants who have applied for Operator positions.

We are anticipating having the Landfill open for the public on Tuesday, August 5th, and may have to then be closed again on a temporary basis in order to comply with KDHE regulations.

I will know more when the Commission meets in regular session this Thursday, July 31st at 9:00 a.m., CST.

At time of posting, there was no news on thomascountyks.gov about the landfill being closed but there are 2 job openings posted: Landfill Supervisor and Landfill Operator.
