Topeka Bank Robbery Suspect Dies After Multi-County Pursuit Ends in Saline County

by Derek White

A dramatic, multi-county police pursuit of a bank robbery suspect came to a fatal end Tuesday morning in Saline County when the suspect, 47-year-old Anthony Marshall, Jr. of Topeka, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident began around 10:14 a.m. on May 13, when Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) troopers joined local law enforcement in Marion County in the pursuit of a vehicle linked to a bank robbery that occurred the previous day at the Equity Bank on SW 29th Street in Topeka.

Troopers attempted to intercept the suspect’s vehicle as it traveled northbound on Interstate 135 in McPherson County. According to the KHP, stop sticks were successfully deployed, deflating both driver’s side tires. Despite the damage, the suspect continued driving, exiting the highway at K-4 near Exit 78.

Shortly afterward, Marshall lost control of the vehicle and drove into a ditch. Authorities say he then sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, and Marshall was transported to Salina Regional Health Center. He later died from his injuries.

Marshall had been charged in a federal criminal complaint tied to the May 12 robbery at the Topeka Equity Bank. The pursuit and subsequent crash involved assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Saline, Marion, and McPherson County sheriff’s offices, as well as police departments from Salina, Hillsboro, Lindsborg, and McPherson.

The incident is under investigation by the FBI and the Topeka Police Department. The Kansas Highway Patrol played a central role in the safe deployment of tactical maneuvers to stop the suspect's vehicle, limiting further danger to the public during the chase.

The event drew widespread attention as law enforcement converged in Saline County, particularly near the area east of I-135 and west of Bridgeport, where the final moments of the pursuit played out.
